During her days as a CSU student, Melissa Brannon knew she wanted to work with kids but wasn’t sure what that might mean in terms of a job. Recognizing that she needed help, Melissa reached out to Career Services and met with Career Specialist Lynn Leon. Lynn gave her several assignments to hone in on how Melissa’s interests might translate into specific roles, and she also guided Melissa on using informational interviews — meeting with people who currently hold, or have held, a job similar to the one you want — to fine-tune her search. “Lynn gave my job search the structure that it needed, and I took the assignments as seriously as I would any class assignment.”
One of the individuals Melissa contacted for an informational interview was a school principal that she had recently met at a friend’s birthday party. “She ended up being a tremendous resource and even invited me to shadow her at school.” Today, that school principal is Melissa’s boss at C.A.S.T.L.E. High School in Cleveland, where Melissa works as an Enrollment Coordinator providing guidance and support to at-risk kids.
